Cascading down the Son Tra peninsula in four tiers named Heaven, Sky, Earth and Sea, the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is the building that put Da Nang on the world luxury map. It is designer Bill Bensley's breakout project, and it still sets the bar.
What it is
Opened in 2012, the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort sits on 39 hectares of jungled headland with 700 meters of private beach, about 30 minutes from Da Nang International Airport. Owned by Sun Group and operated by InterContinental, it holds roughly 200 rooms, suites and villas, and it has been named the World's Leading Luxury Resort multiple times at the World Travel Awards.
The Bill Bensley design
This was the project that made Bill Bensley a household name in hospitality design. He visited 50 Vietnamese temples as research, then built a whole hillside resort in a graphic black-and-white palette laced with playful motifs, from langur monkeys to oversized lanterns. The four levels are stitched together by a funicular railway that runs from the mountaintop arrival down to the beach.
Rooms, suites and the Long Bar
Accommodation runs from oceanview rooms to multi-bedroom beachfront villas, most with sweeping views over the bay. Public spaces are destinations in their own right: the Long Bar, with its striped daybeds and parasol-shaped fans, is one of the most photographed rooms in Vietnam.
Dining: La Maison 1888
The resort's crown is La Maison 1888, a recreated colonial Indochine mansion that holds one MICHELIN star, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Central Vietnam. Its kitchen has been guided by three-Michelin-starred chef Christian Le Squer.

It proved a beach city better known for budget travel could host genuine top-tier luxury, and it remains the benchmark every newer hotel here is measured against.
